Social Media Marketing: It’s Harder Than You Think

When you see a job description for a social media marketer, do you scoff at the fact someone could get paid to play around on social media for a job? I’m here to tell you it’s not what you think it is.

By definition, social media marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media sites. Social media marketing is much more than frolicking on Facebook or tweeting your thoughts on Twitter. We’ve got to dig deeper than that with the marketing aspect of social media platforms. Here are a few things that make up this wonderful job:

  • Insights and analytics: The numbers don’t lie. When you’re trying to figure out what’s working and what isn’t you’ve got to look at your analytics.
  • Graphic designing: Whether you believe it or not, you’ll feel like you’re learning some graphic designing tricks and tips while you market on social media. Social media is all about images and videos, and you’ve got to create those images when you don’t have them handy.
  • Planning: You can’t just slap up some posts all willy nilly. You’ve got to take the time to plan these posts accordingly and make sure they fit each other. Posts are supposed to accomplish something, whether it’s getting engagement or getting the word out. We help each client focus on their specific goals.
  • Websites: When you think of social media, you don’t directly think of websites. But yes, we edit and help create bits and pieces of websites when we need to, especially for social media sites.
  • Newsletter Emails: While it’s a form of social media, you may not always think of who’s behind the newsletter email you get every week. It’s us. We create the emails, schedule them, and send them out. But here’s the thing: we’ve got to figure out the best times to send the emails and the best subject lines. Every little bit matters.

Social media marketing is a job, but it’s a great job. We’re more than happy to do all these things for our clients! Sometimes it’s nice to get a little insight into such a unique job like this.
