The Shimmering Thread: Find the Pattern in Your Brand Story

The Shimmering Thread: How to Find the Pattern in Your Own Story

The short answer

Wickedly Branded® is a brand evolution strategy and authority positioning firm for established women entrepreneurs. Founder Beverly Cornell introduces the Shimmering Thread in her book, Wickedly Branded®.

What is the Shimmering Thread? The Shimmering Thread is the recurring pattern across your history: the experiences, strengths, questions, values, instincts, and ways of seeing that looked unrelated while you were living them. You usually spot it looking backward. Finding it shows you what has been distinctly yours all along, which gives you better material for your brand and your next decision.

I wanted to be a diplomat

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a diplomat. For a while I also wanted to be a marine biologist, until my fear of sharks and the dark deep ocean created a fairly serious workplace issue.

The diplomat dream never became my career. For years, my résumé looked like a list of unrelated jobs. I danced for eighteen years. As a teenager, I lived with host families in Brazil and Spain. In college, I recorded readings for people who were blind. I worked at an ad agency, at Chrysler headquarters, at a corporate glass company, at a language school, and at a language-learning software startup. I taught English as a Second Language. Then the Army started moving us, and I built a company that could move too.

It took me a long time to see what all of it had in common. I was translating.

Dance translates music into movement. Host families taught me to translate between languages and cultures. At the glass company, knowledge lived in people’s heads, and I turned it into binders other people could use. At Chrysler, I stood between the agency and the client and made sure each understood the other.

Today I translate what a woman believes and values into a brand other people can recognize. Same thread, different job title.

In the book, I say it in two sentences: “The job title disappeared. My Shimmering Thread did not.”

What is the Shimmering Thread?

The Shimmering Thread is my name for the pattern that keeps appearing across your history. It runs through jobs, moves, relationships, losses, and wins that never looked connected on a résumé.

The book’s illustration shows a thread looping from a pin marked Past, through Present, toward Future. Along the way it passes words like belonging, connection, courage, and self-trust. Underneath are the six strands it is made of:

  • Experiences
  • Strengths
  • Questions
  • Values
  • Instincts
  • Ways of seeing

One caution, because this idea can be turned into something cruel. Here is the line from the book: “The thread does not require every painful thing to have happened for a reason. Some things were simply hard.”

You are looking for evidence of what has been yours across more than one season. A perfectly packaged origin story is optional.

Why can’t you see your own thread?

You can’t see your own thread because fluency hides it. After years of doing something daily, your best thinking starts to feel like common sense.

There is an old idea that the goldfish never sees the water. Expertise becomes our water. Research on expert memory describes how skilled people organize and retrieve knowledge within familiar domains (Ericsson & Kintsch, 1995). When an answer comes to you in fifteen minutes, the twenty years are in the room. You just can’t feel them.

Women face a second obstacle. In an experimental study of self-promotion, women described their performance less favorably than equally performing men, even after they were told how well they had done (Exley & Kessler, 2022). We call hard-won judgment “instinct” or “being good with people.”

So another person often sees the thread first. When I sit with a founder in a Brand Spark session, I listen for what keeps coming up across her stories. Lauren Connolly of Wild Development Studio described that experience this way: “The Brand Spark was like diving deep into the heart of my business. It wasn’t surface-level at all; it felt like we were peeling back the layers, searching for something deeper.”

How the Shimmering Thread becomes Brand Magic

The Shimmering Thread helps you see the connection for yourself. Brand Magic happens when enough of what is distinctly yours becomes visible for other people to recognize too.

The thread also earns its keep in decisions. It can show you which problems you keep solving, what people keep seeking you out for, and why a direction that looks random on paper makes sense underneath.

How do you find your Shimmering Thread?

You find your Shimmering Thread by laying your history out where you can see it and asking the same three questions of every piece.

  1. List your seasons. Write every job, role, move, and chapter, including the ones you leave off your bio.
  2. Ask what kept showing up. Look for a task, a role, or a kind of problem that appears in at least three places.
  3. Ask what you learned to pay attention to. What do you catch in a conversation that other people miss?
  4. Ask which questions refused to leave you alone. The ones you were chewing on at twenty-five and still are.
  5. Name it with a verb. Mine is translating. Yours might be connecting, protecting, simplifying, or building.
  6. Test it against your Glimmers. Reread your testimonials and thank-you notes. If clients describe the same verb in their own words, you have found it.

Your story has been weaving the thread

That sentence sits at the bottom of the illustration, and I believe it. What makes you different is already in your history, waiting for you to recognize it.

Start with one question:

  • What have you done in every job you ever had, whether or not anyone paid you for it?

What’s your next Brave Step?

Frequently asked questions

What is the Shimmering Thread?

The Shimmering Thread is Beverly Cornell’s name for the recurring pattern across your history: the experiences, strengths, questions, values, instincts, and ways of seeing that looked unrelated while you were living them. She introduces it in Wickedly Branded®.

How do I find what makes my brand different?

List every job, role, and season of your life. Ask what kept showing up, what you learned to pay attention to, and which questions never left you alone. The pattern that appears in at least three places is a strong candidate.

What if my career looks random?

A varied career often hides a consistent thread. Look for the verb you performed in every role, such as translating, connecting, or simplifying. The job titles change while the verb stays.

Does every hard experience have to be part of my brand story?

No. The thread does not require every painful thing to have happened for a reason, and some experiences stay private. You are looking for evidence of what has been distinctly yours, and you decide what to share.

What is the difference between the Shimmering Thread and Brand Magic?

The Shimmering Thread helps you see the pattern in your own history. Brand Magic happens when enough of that pattern becomes visible in your business for other people to recognize it too.
